In Kamehameha-Hawai'i's quick rise from fledgling athletic program to state power, Kolten Wong could be considered as one of the cornerstones.
A three-time 1,000 yard rusher in football and All-State first team catcher in baseball, Wong helped the Warriors become a Big Island power and a force to be reckoned with at the state level.
In football, Wong rushed for 1,039 yards and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore, finishing sixth in the state. As a junior, he led all Hawai'i rushers with 1,576 yards and scored 18 touchdowns, helping Kamehameha-Hawai'i to its second straight Division II state tournament berth.
Wong completed his third straight 1,000-yard season as a senior, a rare feat in Hawai'i football history and even more impressive considering he would get a late start every year due to a summer baseball travel schedule.
In baseball, Wong was an All-Big Island Interscholastic Federation catcher since his freshman year and was selected to The Advertiser's All-State first team as a junior after leading the Warriors to their first state semifinal appearance. This past season, he batted .680 with six home runs in BIIF play and helped Kamehameha-Hawai'i make a return trip to the state quarterfinals despite having only six seniors on the 24-man roster.
Wong also ran track for Kamehameha-Hawai'i, competing in the 100-meter dash and 4x100 relay, and carried a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom. He has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball for the University of Hawai'i at Manoa next season.
Wong also was drafted in the 16th round by the Minnesota Twins in Friday's major-league draft.
