Nothing — not even a broken nose — could stop 'Iolani's Jamie Smith from taking her team back to the girls basketball state tournament this past season.
Smith suffered the broken nose in the second-to-last game of the regular season, leaving her status in doubt for the ILH postseason tournament which the Raiders needed to win in order to gain the state berth.
Just over one week after breaking her nose, she was back in action and scored 17 points in a victory over Sacred Hearts. Then, Smith scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a close win over Kamehameha to send 'Iolani to the state tournament, where the Raiders eventually finished second.
Smith was a central part of 'Iolani's team since her freshman year, when she earned ILH all-star first team honors. She repeated as an ILH first team all-star as a sophomore, then was named league Player of the Year and was selected to The Advertiser's All-State first team as a junior after leading the Raiders to their first ILH championship since 1996.
This past season, Smith averaged 19.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, 1.5 steals and 1.4 assists and was named ILH Co-Player of the Year in addition to being a repeat selection to The Advertiser's All-State first team.
Off the court, Smith carried a 3.3 grade point average and won a 2007 Scholastic Art Award for sculpture. She recently signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for the University of Nevada at Las Vegas next season.
