Listed at 5 feet, 10 inches tall, Kanani Herring towered over her competition during her three years on Kamehameha's state championship volleyball team.
And not just locally.
In 2006, Herring was named National Sophomore of the Year by www.Prepvolleyball.com, considered to be a leading source for high school volleyball news. This past season, she was named National Player of the Year by Volleyball Magazine after helping the Warriors win their third straight state title and ascend to a No. 3 ranking in Prepvolleyball.com's final national Top 100.
Along the way, Herring refined and built on her athletic ability to adapt to new teammates and opposing teams that focused on stopping her. She also played outstanding defense in the back row and was one of the state's toughest servers.
Herring stepped it up a notch in the biggest matches, winning Most Outstanding Player honors in all three state tournaments she played in. She was also named The Advertiser State Player of the Year after all three seasons.
Herring capped her prep career three weeks ago by winning the state high jump championship, and she set a high jump record at the Punahou Invitational earlier in the season.
Herring also reached great heights in the classroom, maintaining a 3.62 grade point average.
Herring has accepted a full scholarship offer to attend the University of Hawai'i, where she will join the Rainbow Wahine and plans to major in kinesiology.
