Hawai'i has been a pioneer in the sports of girls wrestling and judo, and Farrington High School's Tani Ader will be remembered as one of the trailblazers in both.

Ader's six combined state championships in the two sports are more than any other girl, and that is on top of eight O'ahu Interscholastic Association titles — the maximum possible.

In wrestling, Ader won the OIA gold medal at 108 pounds as a freshman and took second in the state. She came back the next year to win the OIA and state championships, then won both titles at 114 as a junior and 120 as a senior.

In judo, Ader won OIA and state crowns at 114 and 115 pounds as a freshman and sophomore, then won the OIA title and took second in the state at 122 pounds as a junior.

This year, Ader won her fourth straight league championship and third state title at 129 pounds.

Beyond individual achievements, Ader has been a leader by example and helped Farrington win an OIA wrestling championship in 2006 and state title in 2007. In judo, Tani helped the Governors win the state championship in 2006.

Ader attacked schoolwork with a similar passion and carried a 3.5 GPA. She will continue her pioneering spirit at Jamestown College in North Dakota, where she will be a member of the school's first women's wrestling team. She plans to major in criminal justice with a minor in computer science.
