The Maui County Council of the Boy Scouts of America have named community leaders J. Stephen Goodfellow and Hilton H. Unemorthe as the 2010 Distinguished Citizen honorees.

This is the highest award given to individuals by the scout's council. The pair will be recognized on July 17 at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, grand ballroom. The reception begins at 6 p.m. and is followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

Goodfellow , the grandson of the founder of Goodfellow Bros., a construction firm, has been an active in scouting, a board member of Seabury Hall, The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii, The Hawaii Nature Center; the Maui Economic Development Board, and the Maui Chamber of Commerce. He has been involved with Maui non-profits such as the YMCA, Ka Lima o Maui, MACC, Hale Makua, Kihei Community Association, Montessori School, Maui Coastal Land Trust, Community Work Day, Maui Community College, Habitat for Humanity, Adopt a Highway and Rotary.

"For me and the company, we are proud to be able to help out when we can" Goodfellow said in a prepared statement. "If we can help, we will, and I know we've done the right thing when the phone rings and someone says thank you for saving my home."

The Goodfellow family has a long legacy of supporting the Boy Scouts, stretching back to Steve's grandfather and father. The company has helped to build Scout camps, and worked closely with many Eagle Scouts doing their final projects.

Unemori serves on boards and various leadership roles for a number of organizations including the Wailuku Rotary Club, St. Anthony Parish, Wailuku Main Street Association, and Catholic Charities; he is a former board member of the Boy Scouts Maui Council and Lokahi Pacific, and a state leader for Worldwide Marriage Encounter Hawaii.

He formed a partnership in Makani Nui, which in conjunction with First Wind, developed, owns and operates Kaheawa Wind Farm on Maui and other wind farms in the state. Unemori remains a serious advocate for Hawaii's energy independence and passionately believes in the need for urgent action by the state, industry, and other players in developing clean and renewable sources of energy to help Hawaii become more sustainable.

Past Boy Scouts' Distinguished Citizen recipients are the late John C. "Johnny" Baldwin, Peter D. Baldwin, the late Colin C. Cameron, Dorvin D. Leis, the late Michael H. Lyons II, Roger P. MacArthur, David "Buddy" Nobriga, Meyer M. Ueoka, and the late Masaru "Pundy" Yokouchi.
