Man in diving group dies; cause under investigation
A man died after he was pulled from waters off O'ahu's North Shore yesterday afternoon.
The man was with a group of divers near the surf spot known as Alligator Rock when he got into trouble about 3:20 p.m., said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department. Bystanders performed CPR on the man, who appeared to be in his 50s, until lifeguards arrived, Cheplic said.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene and transported him in critical condition to a hospital. He was pronounced dead a short while later, Cheplic said.
The cause of death was under investigation.
Cheplic said surf and wind conditions on the North Shore were calm at the time of the incident.
