Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann has opened a Kauai headquarters for a gubernatorial campaign he has yet to announce he will undertake.

Hannemann hosted the office's opening today. It is located on Kuhio Highway in Lihue.

The mayor has strongly suggested he will seek the Democratic nomination for governor in September against former U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, and Hannemann already has received several endorsements.

But he has refused to clearly say he will seek the nomination, nor has he taken out candidacy papers from the state Office of Elections as of last week.

He has until July 20 to submit those papers. Once he does so, by law he must resign from his current office.
