Man killed in early morning H-1 accident

Advertiser Staff

A 39-year-old man was killed early this morning on the H-1 Freeway westbound near the Kalaeloa Boulevard exit when he was crushed between two vehicles.

The man, of Waianae, had been towing another vehicle and stopped in the right lane of the freeway to check the tow rope, police said.

As he did so, a third vehicle rear ended the two parked vehicles, crushing the man between the two at the 1:35 a.m. accident, police said. The man was towing a 1991 white Ford pickup with his 2003 red Chevy pickup. His identity was not released.

The driver who rear ended the man was driving a 1999 Dodge green van, police said.

Police say that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision, but it is unknown if speed was a factor, police say.

The driver of the van is a 58-year-old Waianae woman who was treated and released for minor injuries at The Queen's Medical Center.

The driver of the towed vehicle, a 48-year-old Waianae woman, was not injured. Two teens who were in the vehicle being driven by the man who was killed were not injured.

This is the 29th traffic fatality of the year, compared to the same number at this time last year, police said.
