Mari Miyashiro of Mililani High has been named the Gatorade Hawai'i Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and character. Miyashiro becomes a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced this month.

The 5-foot-1 senior forward led the Trojans (17-1) to the Division I state championship game this past season, recording 16 goals and 10 assists. The Honolulu Advertiser Player of the Year and the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West Player of the Year is a member of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV Olympic Development Program. She ended her prep career with 55 goals and 41 assists.

Miyashiro, who signed a letter of intent to play at Utah State University, maintained a 3.39 GPA and volunteered as a youth soccer coach and on behalf of the Hawaii United Okinawan Association.

MID-PACIFIC NAMES NEW GIRLS COACH

Former University of Hawai'i volleyball player Vernon Podlewski has been named Mid-Pacific Institute's head girls volleyball coach.

Podlewski, an alternate for the 2004 U.S. Olympic team, recently moved back to Hawai'i after coaching at the University of Colorado. After graduating from UH in 2002, he played professionally in Germany and Romania.

MILILANI OFFERS YOUTH CLINIC

Mililani High will conduct a youth football clinic fundraiser May 29 at the school's football stadium.

Special guests include former NFL players Maa Tanuvasa and Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala, and former University of Hawai'i star Nate Ilaoa.

The clinic is open to athletes age 4 to 16 at a cost of $5, and will run from 4:30 to 6 p.m., followed by the Brown and Gold game at 7 p.m.
