With memories of its slain teammate everywhere, the Virginia women's lacrosse team played for the first time since the death of Yeardley Love.

The Cavaliers rallied in the last four minutes to beat Towson, 14-12, yesterday in Charlottesville, Va., and reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.

Love's battered body was found May 3, and Virginia men's lacrosse player George Huguely is charged with murder. The Virginia women's players wore shirts under their jerseys with the phrase "One Team. One Heart. One Love."

Virginia player Whitaker Hagerman said she felt Love's presence all game.

"We had to go out there, we had to play a game, we had to play lacrosse, and we had to play well," Hagerman said.

As the game ended, fans chanted "UVA UVA" and clapped in unison as the players huddled. In the background, Cher's one-time hit "Believe" played. The song features the lyrics "Do you believe in life after love?"

PHELPS WINS 200 IM

Michael Phelps held off Eric Shanteau to win his first 200-meter individual medley on the final day of the Charlotte UltraSwim at Mecklenburg Aquatic Center yesterday at Charlotte, N.C.

Multiple world-record holder Ryan Lochte beat Italian Sebastiano Ranfagni and American Matt Grevers to capture the 200 backstroke.

Emily Brunemann, a five-time NCAA champion at Michigan, won the women's 1,500 freestyle. Other women's winners were Justin Mueller (200 IM), 15-year-old Missy Franklin (200 breaststroke), and Natalie Coughlin (100 freestyle).

University of North Carolina product Josef Kinderwater won the 800 freestyle. Auburn's Gideon Louw won the 100 meter freestyle.

Peter Vanderkaay captured the Grand Prix Series title and its $20,000 purse.

GAY SETS 200 MARK

American sprinter Tyson Gay broke a 44-year-old record for the 200 meters run on a straight track.

Gay ran 19.41 seconds into a headwind yesterday on a specially constructed track in Manchester, England, shaving 0.09 off the mark Tommie Smith set in May 1966 at San Jose, Calif.

Smith was at the Great City Games to watch Gay beat his time, which isn't an official world record because track and field's governing body only recognizes 200s run around a curve.

U.S. WINS IN WORLDS

Ottawa Senators forward Nick Foligno scored twice and Brandon Dubinsky of the New York Rangers had a goal and two assists to lead the United States to a 4-0 victory over France yesterday in the relegation round of the ice hockey world championship at Cologne, Germany.

T.J. Oshie of the St. Louis Blues also scored and Florida Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen stopped all 10 shots he faced in the U.S. goal.

A second straight victory after three first-round defeats gives the Americans six points in relegation Group G.

France has three points with a 1-1 record. Italy is also 1-1 with three points after a 2-1 victory over Kazakhstan, which has no points.

The U.S. faces Italy tomorrow in its final relegation-group game.
