Anthony Salter is known for his speed.
So it should come as no surprise that it took him less than 48 hours to decide that Hawai'i is the best place for him to play basketball next season.
Salter — a touted point guard at Iowa Western Community College — said yesterday he is committed to playing for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team.
Salter was on an official recruiting visit to Honolulu over the weekend. He made his commitment to the Rainbow Warriors just prior to departing.
"I've been here for two days, but I can tell this is where I want to be," Salter said. "I feel like it's a chance for me to come in and help turn it around."
Salter said he expects to make it official today, when he signs a national letter of intent with Hawai'i.
Salter, who is 5 feet 11 and 175 pounds, averaged 12.4 points, 2.8 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore at Iowa Western last season. His statistics were somewhat deceiving because Iowa Western relied on a balanced attack. Salter led the team in scoring, assists, steals (35) and free-throw percentage (.777).
He will be a junior next season, and will have two seasons of eligibility.
"I feel like I can bring speed," Salter said. "When we get out on the break and run, I feel like I can get my own shots or get shots for other guys."
Salter originally signed to play at Auburn during the early signing period in November. He requested — and received — a release after head coach Jeff Lebo was terminated in March.
Since receiving his release from Auburn, Salter said he was also being recruited by Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Charlotte.
As a senior at Rickards High in Tallahassee, Florida, Salter averaged around 19 points, six assists and four rebounds per game.
Several recruiting websites rank Salter among the top junior college point guards in the nation. Prior to the start of the 2009-10 season, www.jucojunction.rivals.com ranked Salter as the top point guard and the No. 3 player overall in junior college.
"I just want to come in and try to be a good leader," Salter said. "My main job as the point guard is to come in and get guys on the same page as far as winning and playing together."
Salter is expected to make an immediate impact for Hawai'i at the point guard position. At the end of last season, Hiram Thompson was the only available point guard on the roster.
Thompson will be a senior next season.
Once Salter signs a letter of intent, he will become the eighth new recruit to sign with Hawai'i for next season.
The others are guard Bo Barnes, forward Dominick Brumfield, guard Jordan Coleman, forward/center Vander Joaquim, point guard Bobby Miles, forward Josten Thomas, and forward Trevor Wiseman.
UH GRAD FLEMINGS TRAINING IN VEGAS
Former Hawai'i standout Roderick Flemings graduated on Saturday. This week, he'll be training at Impact Basketball in Las Vegas.
"He got his school work done, now he can focus on basketball," said Michael Hart, who is Flemings' agent. "He'll be training at Impact Basketball with other NBA-level prospects, preparing himself for the (NBA) Draft."
Hart said Flemings will stay in Las Vegas for at least two weeks. Hart said he is trying to schedule private workouts with NBA teams in June.
"He's one of the most athletic wings available, so there's interest," Hart said.
