Aloha,
In the past, it was as if Day One of our WAC tournaments has been cursed. At the start of today's game it appeared that the curse was going to strike again.
We were down 3-0 before we even had our first at-bat. Despite the fact that we had a home run in every inning, San Jose State was able to maintain the lead throughout the first half of the game. After we shook off our first-game jitters, we began our offensive home run barrage, and were finally able to break the curse.
Day One of our tournament was difficult but successful. The key word for today's game was "clutch." So many of our players came through in times of need, Traci Yoshikawa made a "web gems" diving play at second base, Melissa Gonzalez came through with two clutch back-to-back home runs, and the infield turned two very important double plays.
In my opinion, the reason why we struggled so much today is because we have not played a game in almost two weeks. Toward the end of our WAC regular season our defense was pretty much flawless, today was a different story.
The bright side of today's game is we smashed the ball, not only did we hit home runs but we manufactured runs with base hits as well.
Speaking of home runs, we hit six home runs today, which tied the NCAA home run record of 134. Today's win was crucial, but when we tied the NCAA home run record, it was monumental.
However, the icing on the cake was when we looked up to the stands and saw that we had more fans there then any other team — sometimes I wonder how we will ever be able to pay them back.
As the rust fell off in today's game, tomorrow there will be no room for error. At 2:00 p.m. tomorrow we will play our arch rivals, Fresno State. With a win tomorrow we can proceed directly into Saturday's championship game.
Tomorrow's game will be one of the most intense games of our season, but we plan to go in with a vengeance.
