Advertiser Staff

Jeffrey Van Doornum's lead-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Hawai'i past New Mexico State, 2-1, tonight to complete a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep before 2,089 at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Rainbows won the first game, 7-3.

Lenny Linsky (2-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Rainbows (26-22 overall, 9-10 WAC).

Scott Coffman (3-4) allowed a run in one-third of an inning for the Aggies (35-19-1, 13-9-1), who have dropped seven in a row.

UH starter Matt Sisto allowed an unearned run, two hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings.

NMSU starter Dan Reid (6-3) allowed a run on six hits with four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

Hawai'i took a 1-0 lead in the second. David Freitas led off with a single, advanced to second on Greg Garcia's sacrifice and an out later, scored on Kevin Macdonald's line single to left off the glove off of leaping shortstop Ryan Aguayo.

The Aggies tied the game at 1 in the top of the third. Jared Jordan led off with a walk and went to third when Parker Hipp reached on a fielder's choice grounder to first that first baseman Macdonald threw wildly to second, putting runners at the corners to set up Joel Cardinal's RBI single.
