Prisoner escapes while attending brother's funeral

Advertiser Staff

Maui police yesterday continued to search for prisoner Harry Kahaleauki after he escaped from Maui Community Correctional Center officers while attending his brother's funeral at Ballard's Mortuary in Kahului on Saturday.

Kahaleauki, 38, is described as Hawaiian, 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing orange M.C.C.C. clothing with leg shackles.

Kahaleauki is considered dangerous and police are warning residents to approach him with "extreme caution."

Kahaleauki was arrested on April 20 for numerous offenses including stealing a van and using it to steal an automated teller machine. He was also charged with burglarizing a Lahaina business and a Ka'anapali home.

Anyone with information on Kahaleauki's whereabouts is asked to call 911, contact the Criminal Investigation Division at 244-6425, or call CrimeStoppers at 242-6966.o
