Maui firefighters last night were monitoring brushfires in Olowalu and near Kahului Airport.

The Olowalu fire, which began Monday in the Ukumehame area, burned an estimated 1,100 acres and was 90 percent contained yesterday, Maui County said.

Firefighters were also monitoring a brushfire that burned three acres in Spreckelsville near the airport.

That brushfire was first reported at 10:03 p.m. Thursday. It was 90 percent contained yesterday.

The area is populated by homeless encampments. One cat in a cage was removed by animal control personnel.
