Oahu, Maui electric bills to rise in May

The electric meter will tick a little faster this month for O'ahu residents, with the average bill hitting $158.20.

Electricity bills for the typical O'ahu residential customer will jump $8.09 this month.

Hawaiian Electric Co. said the typical 600-kilowatt-hour bill for O'ahu residential customers will rise to $158.20 from $150.11 in April.

The effective rate for electricity in Honolulu is 24.84 cents per kilowatt hour in May, an increase from the 23.5 cents last month.

Elsewhere in the state:

• Maui customers will see rates rise to 28.41 cents per kilowatt hour this month from April's 25.62 cents. The typical Maui bill will increase by $16.75 to $178.51.

• Big Island residential rates will drop to 32.20 cents from last month's 32.8 cents. The typical bill will fall by $3.70 to $204.26.

• On Kaua'i, the rate will decline to 34.18 cents per kilowatt hour. Last month the rate charged by the Kaua'i Island Utility Cooperative was 34.33 cents.

SHINDO NOW KAI MEDICAL PRESIDENT, CEO

Kai Medical, a Kaimukī medical device company that's working on wireless vital sign monitors, said Dustin Shindo has been appointed its president and chief executive officer.

Shindo, who founded Kai and is its chairman, most recently served at Hoku Corp., where he was chairman, president and chief executive.

Shindo will succeed Andrea Yuen as Kai Medical's CEO. Yuen will now serve as the company's chief strategy officer and continue as part of Kai Medical's executive team.

Shindo also serves as an adviser to Hoku and sits on the boards of Hawai'i Nui Brewing Co. and Mehana Tea Co. Shindo stepped down at Hoku after a controlling interest was sold to a company based in China.
