Solomon Silva shuffled in leg chains into District Court yesterday and was ordered to stand trial on charges that he shot one man and fired at another in a quiet street in Kailua.
District Court Judge Collette Garibaldi found enough probable cause to bind Silva over for trial. He is being held on $250,000 bail and will appear at an arraignment and plea hearing May 20 in Circuit Court.
Silva, 45, of Waimānalo, is charged with attempted murder and various firearms violations.
The charges stem from a shooting Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the intersection of Kihapai and Wailepo streets in Kailua's Coconut Grove area.
Silva wounded David Pedro, who was taken to Castle Medical Center and listed in stable condition, and Coety Haili was shot at and missed, a police affidavit said.
Police said the shooting was part of a fight that broke out after two groups met Saturday morning to make amends for an altercation the night before.
Witness Samuel Dilliner yesterday testified that the Friday night altercation involved Pedro — his son-in-law — and Silva's son-in-law. Dilliner and Silva are longtime acquaintances and arranged a meeting so the younger men could make amends.
Dilliner said he drove a group that included Pedro, Haili, another man and Dilliner's 3-year-old daughter to Kihapai and Wailepo streets.
"I had a plan they'd shake hands and apologize and then I'd take my daughter to get a pump for her swimming pool," Dilliner said. "But that's not what happened."
The two sons-in-law talked, but people began arguing and fighting, Dilliner said.
"I saw Solomon Silva come out of an apartment with a gun. He had it in his hand and he was running with it by his side," Dilliner said. Silva knelt and began shooting, Dilliner said.
Dilliner said he heard the first shot, but the scene was so chaotic he lost count of how many shots were fired.
"I was frozen," Dilliner said. "I was yelling, 'Stop that.' David Pedro was face-down on the ground and I saw Solomon Silva chasing Coety (Haili). I saw holes in David Pedro's shoulder and back and I seen blood. I knew he had to go to the hospital."
Dilliner drove Pedro to Castle Medical Center.
Pedro will be in the hospital for another week or two, police detective Victor Lau said.
An off-duty officer said Silva remained at the scene and was calm as the officer detained him for investigation.
Police have not recovered the weapon, said senior Deputy Prosecutor Maurice Arrisgado. It is believed to be a 9 mm pistol. No handguns are registered in Silva's name, Arrisgado said.
