City needs lei for Hawaii Memorial Day ceremonies
The city announced today that it needs 50,000 fresh lei for the graves of veterans at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl and at all state veterans' cemeteries for Memorial Day.
The lei are needed on May 28 and can be dropped off at designated community parks and fire stations on Oahu and the Parks Permit Office at the Fasi Municipal Building. Loose plumeria flowers can also be dropped off on that same day at Waipahu District Park, Kailua District Park and Makua Alii Senior Center at 1542 Kalakaua Ave.
The 61st annual Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. on May 31 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. The Boy Scouts will place a garland of flowers on each grave to honor the memory of the fallen veterans and service members.
The city is asking for leis made with fresh flowers or ti leaves that measure 20 to 24 inches before tying. All lei must be tied and floral sprays such as ti leaf and anthurium bouquets are also being accepted.
Lei drop-off location on Oahu on May 28:
City parks (between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.)
Any fire station on Oahu between 6:30 a.m. and noon
Department of Parks & Recreation Offices (between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.)
