WAILUKU, Maui — Kailua junior Ryan McMonigle scattered seven hits in a complete game yesterday, holding Kaiser scoreless over the final six innings to help the Surfriders win, 6-1, in the first round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Baseball State Championships.

Kailua, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's third-place team, improved to 12-3 in the regular and postseason and will face No. 2 seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Saint Louis (16-2) in today's 2 p.m. quarterfinal at Iron Maehara Stadium.

Kaiser, which finished sixth in the OIA and earned a state tournament berth only after rallying past Waiākea, 8-7, in a play-in game last Friday, fell to 8-10.

The Cougars put runners into scoring position in four of the last six innings yesterday, only to leave each one stranded. They left eight men on base overall.

"We didn't execute," Kaiser coach Mark Rasmussen said. "We didn't step up with the clutch hit."

The Surfriders took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on Alan Baldwin's two-run single, but the Cougars cut it to 2-1 in the bottom half on Kaipo Oamilda-Scholtz's home run over the left-field fence.

Kailua made it 3-1 in the fourth on Kory Sasaoka's sacrifice fly to left field, and 4-1 in the fifth after Jared Matsumoto led off with a single, advanced to third on an error and scored on a delayed steal.

The Surfriders added two runs in the sixth on Alika Ramseyer-Ho's RBI single to right and Jared Iha's bases-loaded walk.

That was more than enough support for McMonigle, a right-hander who struck out two.

"We faced him in the regular season, so we knew he would hit his spots," Rasmussen said. "He just kept us off balance."

Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said there was nothing fancy about the victory.

"We just pitched and played defense well enough to win," he said.
