A brushfire that was ignited in West Maui on Monday continues to burn, but is now 80 percent contained, firefighters said today. Increasing winds have caused sporadic and minor flare-ups today.
A county news release says about 50 firefighters, including state Division of Forestry and Wildlife wildland firefighters, were on scene today. Firefighters will continue to monitor the burn area tonight for flare-ups.
Predicted increases in wind conditions remain a concern.
The National Weather Service has posted a red-flag fire alert for leeward areas of all islands, warning that drought conditions, low humidity and strong winds will create favorable wildfire conditions.
They reported winds picked up but that that there was no notable effect on the fire.
The burn area remains closed to public access. Firefighters say there are dangers from roots burning underground, falling branches and trees, and smoldering surface material.
More than 1,100 acres have been scorched since the fire was first reported. No injuries and no damage to structures have been reported.
