UH seeks WAC tennis crown

The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team will seek its third straight Western Athletic Conference Tournament title today when it meets Fresno State at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif.
The top-seeded Rainbow Warriors (11-7) advanced to the final with a 4-1 victory over Idaho yesterday. The Bulldogs beat Boise State, 4-2, in the other semifinal.
UH won the doubles point against the fifth-seeded Vandals (22-9), then clinched the match with straight-set singles wins by No. 1 Dennis Lajola, No. 3 Leo Rosenberg and No. 4 Jeremy Tweedt. Lajola, a three-time all-WAC first-team selection, beat Lachlan Reed, 6-0, 6-0.
Idaho gained its point after UH senior Andreas Weber retired during his match against Artem Kuznetsov on the No. 2 court. Weber's status for today's championship match was not known.
The 'Bows led in two of the three unfinished matches.
Meanwhile, the fourth-seeded UH women's team lost to top-seeded Boise State, 4-0, in a semifinal to finish its season 12-14.
The Broncos (21-5) won the doubles point, then clinched it with straight-set singles victories at the Nos. 1, 3 and 5 courts. Boise's Pichittra Thongdach, the WAC Player of the Year, beat Sophie Kobuch, UH's lone senior, 7-5, 6-2.
The 'Bows were ahead in the three singles matches that were not completed.
WATER POLO
UH TO PLAY FOR FIFTH
Amarens Genee scored three goals as the fourth-seeded University of Hawai'i women's water polo team defeated eighth-seeded Arizona State, 7-4, yesterday in the consolation bracket of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament in Los Angeles.
Monika Eggens scored two goals and Serena Bredin made 12 saves against the Sun Devils (16-14).
The Rainbow Wahine (17-8) will play seventh-seeded San Diego State (21-14) for fifth place today.
Second-seeded USC (22-2) will play fifth-seeded UCLA (19-7) for the championship. The Trojans beat third-seeded California, 9-7, and the host Bruins upset top-seeded Stanford, 7-6.

3 WAHINE HONORED
Hawai'i's Hannah Tuson-Turner, Darla Baldwin and Hanne Nagatani have been named to the 2010 All-Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Women's Team.
Tuson-Turner, a junior skipper from Orcas Island, Wash., earned her third all-conference honor.
Baldwin, a junior from Westminster, Calif., and Nagatani, a freshman from Point Richmond, Calif., were named all-PCCSC crew for the first time.

HPU SWEEPS
Hawai'i Pacific scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat Academy of Art, 7-4, yesterday and complete a sweep of a Pacific West Conference baseball doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Park.
Bas Nooij had three hits and two RBIs for the Sea Warriors (37-10, 27-4), who scored on a single, balk and sacrifice fly in the sixth to break a 4-4 tie.
In the first game, Wade Tamaru had three hits and four RBIs and Tyler Davis hit a two-run homer as HPU rolled to a 14-5 win over the Urban Knights (6-37, 2-25).
