Rangers order closures at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park because of high winds
With gusts reaching more than 50 mph at some areas at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, rangers today have closed some areas to protect visitors from falling tree debris and other hazards.
Mauna Loa Road, Mauna Loa Trail, Red Hill Cabin and the Mauna Loa Summit Cabin have been shut. No backcountry permits are being issued for those sites. Rangers have also closed Namakanipaio Campground.
"We continue to assess real and potential hazards caused by this wind storm and do what's necessary to protect people and park resources," said Chief Ranger Talmadge Magno in a statement.
