Freshman outside hitter Jonas Umlauft had 21 kills to help fifth-ranked Hawai‘i to a 30-21, 34-32, 30-24 sweep of No. 2 Pepperdine tonight in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match at Malibu, Calif.
It was a reversal of Friday night when the Waves (13-6 overall, 11-5 MPSF) swept the Warriors (15-8, 11-7).
The Warriors also got nine kills from Matt Rawson and seven each from Steven Grgas and Steven Hunt. The Warriors out-hit the Waves, .367 to .195.
Cory Riecks led Pepperdine with 14 kills.
The Warriors never trailed in the first set, increasing a 9-7 lead to 15-7, with Nejc Zemljak serving. UH led by as many as 10, including 29-19 before Pepperdine scored consecutive points.
In the second set, Umlauft had consecutive kills to give UH a 31-30 lead, but a service error by Ernie Vidinha allowed Pepperdine to tie it. UH took a 32-31 advantage on a block of J.D. Schleppenbach by Grgas and Umlauft, but Pepperdine tied it at 32 on a kill by Maurice Torres. A kill by Grgas and a hitting error by Schleppenbach ended it.
With the score tied at 15 in the third set, the Warriors took control with four consecutive points, including kills by Grgas and Umlauft, who finished hitting .429.
