No. 3 Campbell routs Kapolei in softball

A pitcher the caliber of Campbell's Katie Manuma doesn't need much run support.

She got plenty of it anyway courtesy of an early and often scoring onslaught yesterday against Kapolei.

The first seven Sabers batters scored and Manuma pitched a four-hitter in Campbell's 12-1 victory over Kapolei in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West softball game.

"It feels good to have runs," said Manuma, a senior right-hander. "It makes it easier for the pitcher knowing you have a lot of runs."

Campbell's first seven batters reached on three hits, two walks and two errors.

Brianne Silva-Kapihe had a two-run single to center and Gerika Pantohan had a two-run double to left in the inning for Campbell, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll.

"It helped us that Kapolei dropped a couple balls here and there," said Campbell coach David Perreira. "I'm happy that as a team we took advantage of their mistakes and capitalized on it ... get the hits we need, score the runs, take the extra bags."

In the second, Daylene Antonio had a sacrifice fly and Nicole Arata scored on a wild pitch to put Campbell (6-0) up 9-0.

In the third, Pantohan had a two-run homer to left through the wind and Manuma had an RBI double to cap the scoring.

Pantohan, a senior third baseman and lead-off hitter, redeemed herself after going 0 for 4 in a 9-0 win over Kapolei earlier this week.

"On Tuesday, I struggled at the plate," said Pantohan, who signed with the University of Hawai'i. "Today, I was looking to hit my pitch."

Meanwhile, Manuma was cruising in the pitcher's circle against No. 10 Kapolei (1-3).

She finished with one walk and six strikeouts in a game shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule. None of the 15 putouts was recorded by an outfielder.

Manuma, who signed with BYU, had to make an adjustment with the wind blowing in from center.

"There is a lot of wind behind me so my ball kept rising," she said.

Manuma allowed a lead-off single to Dorian Acierto in the first, then retired 11 in a row.

She put two in scoring position with two outs in the fourth, but got a strikeout to end the threat.

Manuma lost the shutout in the fifth on an unearned run. With Tanisha Aniya on second and two outs, Acierto singled to left. Aniya held up at third, but came in after the left fielder booted the ball.

A bright spot for the Hurricanes was reliever Winona Pauline, who entered in the third and retired all eight batters she faced, including seven via strikeout.
