Hawaii’s reading scores on the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress show improvement among eighth-graders and a slight decline among fourth-graders.

Results of the study, based on a series of federally funded achievement tests and known as “The Nation’s Report Card,” were released today.
Hawaii was one of nine states showing improvement in eighth-grade reading levels in 2009.
The study showed the average reading score for eighth-graders nationwide was 262 out of a possible 500 points.
Hawaii’s eighth-graders averaged 255 points, up four points from 2007.
Also showing improvement were Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Utah.
Nationally, fourth-grade scores held mostly steady at 221 while Hawaii’s declined slightly from 213 in 2007 to 211 in 2009.
