BYUH falls to Cal Poly Pomona, 78-75, in NCAA II West final

With Cal Poly Pomona players celebrating, BYU-Hawaii's Marques Whippy can only look on in disbelief after the Seasiders lost 78-75 in the NCAA II West Region final at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash.

Brigham Young-Hawaii overcame an 11-point halftime deficit, took a lead, only to fall short to Cal Poly Pomona, 78-75, today in the NCAA II West Region men's basketball final at Western Washington University.

BYUH trailed 77-72 inside a minute to play but Jet Chang hit a 3-pointer to make it 77-75.
Cal Poly Pomona hit one of two free throws to make it 78-75 with 26 seconds left. The Seasiders had three opportunities to tie but missed all three 3-point attempts.
Lucas Alves led BYUH with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Chang had 21 points. Virgil Buensuceso added 13 and Anthony Reilly 11 for BYUH (22-6), which saw its 15-game winning streak come to an end.
Austin Swift led Cal Poly Pomona with 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.Donnelle Booker added 15 points for the Broncos (25-6), who have now won 18 of the past 19 games.
It was the second year in a row that Cal Poly Pomona ended BYUH's season. Last season, the Broncos scored on a putback with three seconds left to stun the Seasiders, 59-58, in Laie.

BYUH trailed 36-25 at halftime and a Swift jumper made it 38-25 with 19:49 left to play.
Cal Poly Pomona maintained its advantage, leading 50-38, with 14:39 left before BYUH made its run.
Alves scored six of BYUH's next 11 points to pull BYUH to 52-49 before Cal Poly Pomona widened its lead to 58-51 with 9:32 left.
Cal Poly Pomona led 62-54 with 8:04 left before BYUH got on another roll.
Chang had two baskets, Alves a hoop and a free throw and Anthony Reilly hit two free throws as BYUH tied it at 63.
Reilly's three-point play gave BYUH its first second-half lead at 66-63 with 5:04 left.
An Alves dunk made it 70-67 with 3:32 left. But the Broncos scored the next five points for a 72-70 lead with 2:09 left.
Chang's layup tied it at 72 with 2:01 left.
But Swift scored on a layup with 1:43 left and then hit a 3-pointer with 51 seconds left to give the Broncos at 77-72 lead.
Chang hit a 3 with 38 seconds left to make it 77-75 and the Broncos' Mark Rutledge hit a free throw for a 78-75 lead with 26 seconds left.
In the frantic final 12 seconds, Chang attempted two 3-pointers and Reilly one with 0:02 left.
