Punahou's Alaka'i Aglipay kept the ball down this time out and it allowed him to shut down 'Iolani's offense yesterday.
Aglipay pitched a two-hitter, and Reece Toma and Ryan Yamane — the Nos. 8 and 9 hitters in the order — hit back-to-back homers in the sixth as visiting Punahou beat 'Iolani, 6-0, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game.
"It was a clutch performance," Punahou coach Eric Kadooka said of Aglipay. "It was a big game, especially at 'Iolani. For him to throw strikes, mix speeds and hold them to two hits ... it was a clutch performance for us."
Aglipay walked four and struck out five in a 103-pitch effort. The right-hander benefitted from three double plays and only two putouts were recorded in the outfield.
"My two-seam (fast ball) and curve ball were working really well today. It was going in and out," Aglipay said.
In his previous start Saturday, Aglipay lasted just 1 1/3 innings against Kamehameha. The game ended in a 9-9 tie.
"I had to stick down, so I don't get hurt,"Aglipay said. "Because that's what happened to me last game against Kam. I kept it up and I got bombed."
Both hits allowed by Aglipay came in the third — back-to-back singles by Sean Nada and Jensen Park. Aglipay got a ground out and strikeout to get out of the jam.
All the Buffanblu runs scored with two outs.
Punahou (1-0-1) scored one in the first on a throwing error by the shortstop, and one in the fourth on an infield single by Brett Fukushima.
The Buffanblu put the game away with a four-run sixth.
Rick Nomura hit a one-out single to center. Jeremy Ioane laid down a bunt single, and Nomura advanced to third which was uncovered.
After a fly out, Toma belted a three-run homer to left to make it 5-0.
"I wasn't trying to do too much," said Toma, the designated hitter. "I was just trying to do something small, but (the pitch) came up and in."
Yamane then pulled a pitch over the right-field wall.
"I always wanted to hit a home run," said Yamane, the second baseman. "That was my first home run in a very long time. With this (outfield) fence, anything can happen."
Both homers came on 2-0 pitches.
'Iolani (1-1) stranded six runners, including four in scoring position.
"I have to give Aglipay credit," said 'Iolani coach Jason Arakaki. "He kept us off-balance. He was real effective with his breaking pitch today. I didn't expect us to struggle that much against him, but it was just one of those days."
The Raiders had runners at first and second with one out in the first, and a 3-1 count on their clean-up hitter.
Aglipay got a pop up into shallow center and shortstop Fukushima made a running catch. The 'Iolani runner at second had run to third and was easily doubled off to end the inning.
"That stopped me from growing some gray hairs. It was good," Aglipay said.
The Raiders also had two on in the third and seventh, but Aglipay kept making big pitches to escape trouble, including a game-ending double-play grounder to second with runners at the corners.
