Claude Giroux didn't need the officials to check his winner.

Giroux scored 5:59 into overtime to give the Flyers a 4-3 victory over Chicago in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals last night, cutting the Blackhawks' series lead to 2-1. Game 4 is tomorrow night in Philadelphia.

Giroux scored on a redirection off Matt Carle's pass, beating Antti Niemi to decide the third straight one-goal game in the series.

"I tried to get a stick on it, and it just trickled in," Giroux said. "Our line started playing well, so any time your line's going you just play better I think. The whole team just showed up tonight, and we really wanted that win.

"Desperation was the key word, I think. It's almost do or die."

BELMONT ODDS ON ICE BOX

For a change, Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito has the favorite for the $1 million Belmont Stakes in New York.

A two-time Belmont winner with long shots Birdstone in 2004 and Da' Tara in 2008, Zito has two of the top three choices for Saturday's final leg of the Triple Crown: Ice Box is the 3-1 morning-line favorite and his other starter, Fly Down, is the 9-2 third pick.

A field of 12 was entered yesterday for a Belmont that will be run without Derby winner Super Saver or Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky.

Preakness runner-up First Dude is the 7-2 second choice.

CHING SCORES IN 2-1 LOSS

Juan Pablo Angel scored with seconds remaining in extra time last night as the host New York Red Bulls snapped a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 Major Soccer League victory over the Houston Dynamo at Harrison, N.J.

Angel's goal was his team-leading sixth of the season and came off a direct kick in the 94th minute. It sailed into the left side of the goal past lunging Houston goalkeeper Pat Onstad.

Sinisa Ubiparipovic gave New York (6-5-0) a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. The Dynamo (5-6-1) tied the score in the 65th minute when Brian Ching, a Kamehameha Schools alum from Hale'iwa, knocked in his second of goal of the season.

HONOLULU'S CHOW WINS

Michael Chow, a 33-year-old professional poker player from Honolulu, won his first World Series of Poker bracelet by defeating the 818-player field in the $1,500 Omaha high-low split Event 4.

The third-largest Omaha high-low split event field created a massive prize pool of $1,104,300, with Chow taking home $237,463.

What made the victory sweeter for Chow was that the final table wrapped up during the early hours of his 33rd birthday.

Chow, formerly a real estate broker and investor, decided to play full time in 2007. He now has $643,237 in career tournament earnings, with six WSOP cashes.

Chow defeated fellow pro Dan Heimiller after a lengthy heads-up battle to win the bracelet.
