The newest sport in school P.E. programs? Land paddling, cousin to stand-up paddling. Land paddling takes the motions of stand-up to the pavement. All that's required is a head-high stick and a skateboard for a student's full-body workout.

Mililani High School is one of four public schools in Hawai'i that have added land paddling. "It's an awesome sport because it definitely builds self-esteem and self-confidence," said Mililani P.E. teacher Jason Agsalda. "Just to get kids motivated and get kids to be active, I'm all for it." WALK NOW FOR AUTISM

CHARITY STROLL JUNE 12 IN ALA MOANA PARK

Autism Speaks, the nation's largest autism advocacy organization, is holding its two- to three-mile fun walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 12, in Ala Moana Beach Park. The event is free; donations are requested, but not required, and walkers are encouraged to get donations from friends and family; $150 in donations earns a walk T-shirt. Register at www.walknowforautismspeaks.org/hawaii, or at the site (Magic Island side of the park), beginning at 7 a.m. Autism Speaks aims to increase awareness that autism is the nation's fastest-growing developmental disorder.
