The University of San Diego's Alex Ching, a Punahou alum from Honolulu, shot a 6-under-par 66, to beat Tiger Woods' course record and take the clubhouse lead in the second round of the NCAA Division I Golf Championship at Ooltewah, Tenn.

Ching is at 9-under 135, two strokes ahead of Henrik Norlander (69) of Augusta State and Peter Uihlein (68) of Oklahoma State. Nine teams were unable to finish because of darkness.

Ching, who started on the back nine today, had seven birdies on his first 11 holes, but a double-bogey at the par-3 No. 3 dropped him to 5 under. He birdied the par-4 No. 7.

Ching's 66 was a stroke better than Woods' 67 at The Honors Course in the second round of the 1996 NCAA Championships. Ching also broke Tiger's 36-hole record of 136, also set in 1996.

Florida State leads the team standings at 14-under 562, followed by Oklahoma State (567) and Georgia Tech (572). San Diego is tied for fifth at 576.

An individual champion will be crowned after tomorrow's third round.
