Kaneohe Ranch to break ground Monday on Whole Foods in Kailua

Advertiser Staff

Kaneohe Ranch will be starting construction on its Kailua Town Center-Phase 3 on Monday in a redevelopment that will include a Whole Foods Market, an additional 8,000 square feet of retail space and improvements to parking and pedestrian walkways.

This project is at the corner of Kailua Road and Hinano Way and is part of the community-based master plan for redeveloping Kailua and improving the overall pedestrian experience.

Whole Foods will occupy 32,000 square feet and will be built in an architectural style. The retail shops surrounding Whole Foods will have Hawaiian-style pitched roofs, board-and-batten siding and wood shakes. The tropical landscape will include a “green wall” and following Kaneohe Ranch’s long tradition, there will be public art in the garden. There will also be ample outdoor seating and a trellised dining area.

“Kailua Town Center-Phase 3 is a gathering place designed for the residents of Kailua to enjoy an environmentally friendly and relaxed atmosphere,” said Mitch D’Olier, resident and CEO of Kaneohe Ranch, in a statement.

Construction will be completed in the fall of 2011 with Whole Foods Market and the surrounding retail shops opening soon after, said Kimo Steinwascher, vice president for leasing and development at Kaneohe Ranch.

Steinwascher said there will be continuous access to the new First Hawaiian Bank branch as well as Longs Drugs and the Foodland Marketplace throughout construction. There will also be additional parking on the upper floor of the parking garage near Longs.
