Who knew that the world-renowned mixed martial art kajukenbo was created in the mid-1940s at Palama Settlement by the Black Belt Society, a small group of men with black belts in various martial arts? Peter Young Yil Choo, Frank Ordonez, Joe Holck, Adriano Emperado and Clarence Chang formed a hui to train and learn from each other, a collaboration that marked the beginning of the "evolutionary adaptive style" named for the martial arts the creators practiced: karate, judo, jujitsu, kenpo and Chinese boxing.

ISLAND STARS TO CONVERGE SATURDAY

Willie K, Melveen Leed and the Hot Club of Hulaville are among 150 entertainers lined up for the American Lung Association Hawaii's Breathe Concert on Saturday at Hawai'i Theatre.

Marian Jay Morrison, who has returned to Hawai'i after 15 years with Walt Disney Entertainment, has put together a show filled with comedy, song and dance, along with style and flair with help from 2 Couture.
