A 22-year-old, Kaneohe-based Marine was one of three Marines killed Sunday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said today.

Lance Cpl. Timothy J. Poole, of Bowling Green, Ky., was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, from Marine Corps Base Kaneohe.
The Kaneohe Marine Corps Base said Poole's unit deployed to Afghanistan in November and joined Regimental Combat Team 7 to conduct counterinsurgency operations with the Afghan National Security Forces, providing security for the Afghan people and promoting development in their region.
He was killed along with two Marines from the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force from Camp Lejeune, N.C., the Department of Defense said.
The other Marines were Sgt. Daniel M. Angus, 28, of Thonotosassa, Fla., and Lance Cpl. Zachary D. Smith, 19, of Hornell, N.Y.
Poole, an infantryman, joined the Marine Corps in July, 2007, and reported to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment in December 2007. He previously deployed with the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment twice to Iraq in 2008 and 2009, returning to Hawaii in March 2009.
His awards include the Purple Heart Medal (posthumously), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Afghanistan and Iraq Campaign Medals and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
