A University of Hawaii-Manoa Faculty Senate resolution accuses Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw of violating procedures in the search for a new Cancer Research Center of Hawaii director.

The resolution approved last week says Hinshaw ignored policy in appointing Michele Carbone as interim director in 2008, thus providing him an unfair advantage in the subsequent search process for a permanent director.
The resolution says the search for a permanent director wasn’t conducted in a manner that was fair, open or impartial.
The communications director in the chancellor’s office, Diane Chang, says Carbone’s appointment was appropriate.
She says under his leadership the center is making great strides in recruiting strong cancer researchers and building its new facility.
