KAILUA — Moanalua completed a tough two-game road swing this week, holding off Kalāheo, 57-49, last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball action.

Nā Menehune improved to 7-1 in the OIA's Red Conference Eastern Division. The Mustangs fell to 4-4.

Just four days earlier, Moanalua won at Kahuku, 64-58, to climb into a first-place tie with the Red Raiders.

"The way our schedule worked out, most of our home games were in the first round," Nā Menehune coach Greg Tacon said. "We only have one home game left. But the way our guys are, they're up for the challenge."

They faced a much-improved Kalāheo team last night, compared to the Mustangs who lost, 59-47, at Moanalua in the regular-season opener. In that game, Nā Menehune led 27-9 at halftime and 48-24 after three periods.

Moanalua led from start to finish last night, but its biggest lead was 13 points, and Kalāheo cut it to 50-45 after Aaron Fernandez's free throw with 1:35 remaining in the game. But Keven Amaral answered with a three-point play to make it 53-45 seven seconds later, and the Mustangs could not get closer than six points the rest of the way.

Fernandez scored 19 of his game-high 22 points in the second half.

"We were down five with the ball and Aaron shooting a 3," Kalāheo coach Chico Furtado said. "You can't ask for much more than that. We were 11 of 21 from the field in the second half, and we were playing with more confidence. I told our guys that their energy level was the reason we got back in the game, but against a team like Moanalua, we need that energy level for all 32 minutes. They're a very good team, with very good players."

Marcus Keene led Nā Menehune with 15 points, Marcus Monroe added 13, and Amaral had 11.
