Board of Water Supply crews have repaired the blown 6-inch hydrant valve that temporarily closed traffic lanes on Ala Wai Boulevard and left three high-rise apartments without water service last night.

The break, which sent a geyser over the busy street, was reported about 1 p.m. and Honolulu Board of Water Supply crews worked throughout the afternoon to isolate the problem. Police closed Ala Wai Boulevard between Namahana and Nui Streets shortly after the break, causing a major traffic jam. Two lanes were reopened by mid-evening.
Two water wagons were placed in the area, one fronting the Hawaiian Monarch Hotel and one fronting the Royal Aloha Condominium, to assist those in the affected buildings.
Water service was restored around 12:30 a.m. and all lanes of Ala Wai Boulevard wre reopened by 4:30 a.m.
It was originally reported that the problem was a broken 16-inch water main, but the agency later said it was a blown 6-inch hydrant valve.
