Punahou took firm control of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball race last night, holding off visiting 'Iolani, 40-28.

The defending state runner-up Buffanblu improved to 6-1 in the ILH, alone in first place ahead of Mid-Pacific (4-2) and 'Iolani (3-2).

Punahou had defeated 'Iolani by 21 points in their first-round meeting, and the Buffanblu appeared headed toward another rout last night after Brittnie Lau's 3-pointer made it 33-16 midway through the fourth period.

But Punahou sank only one of eight free throws down the stretch, opening the door for a Raiders' comeback. 'Iolani cut it to 35-28 after a 3-pointer by Lahela Usui with 1:39 remaining, but Mysha Sataraka converted two layups off steals in the final minute to seal the victory.

"We were trying to play our tempo and be strong with the ball," said Sataraka, a sophomore guard who finished with 12 points. "We knew (the Raiders) were going to come out harder and be ready this time. They were more intense."

The Raiders jumped to a 4-0 lead after Alex Masaquel's turnaround jumper and Taimane Passi's putback, but Punahou answered with a 10-0 run as 'Iolani did not score again until Lori Yamashita's 3-pointer made it 10-7 with 3:52 left in the first half.

The Buffanblu then ended the half with a 6-2 run to lead 16-9 at the break.

After another 3-pointer by Yamashita cut it to 19-14 two minutes into the third period, Punahou finished the quarter with an 8-2 run capped by Sataraka's layup to put the Buffanblu ahead, 27-16, heading into the fourth.

Punahou then began the final period with Khaliyah Thompson's free throw, Sataraka's layup and Lau's 3-pointer to go up, 33-16.

"Our offense goes in waves, but we stayed consistent on defense," Buffanblu coach Mike Taylor said. " 'Iolani came out with more intensity this time, but we stayed the course with hard defense."

Thompson added 10 points for Punahou, which also got seven points, eight rebounds and two blocks from Hailey Maeda.

Yamashita led the Raiders with 10 points.
