Main break spills 11,025 gallons of sewage into canal

Advertiser Staff

About 11,025 gallons of sewage were discharged Sunday into a drainage canal that empties into Pearl Harbor because of a main break near the 14th hole at Ted Makalena Golf Course, the state Department of Health Clean Water Branch said.

The city Department of Environmental Services responded to the spill about 2:12 p.m., and a crew arrived by 2:50 p.m.

Repairs to the break continued yesterday.

The spill was the result of a failed force main connected to the Waipahu Wastewater Pump Station on Waipahu Depot Road, the city said.

Warning signs were posted, and water sampling was conducted yesterday.

The drainage canal where the sewage spilled empties into the Middle Loch of Pearl Harbor, which is not a public recreational waterway.
