Wrong-way driver hits, kills pedestrian in Waikiki
A 61-year-old Kaneohe man died last night after he was struck by a car traveling the wrong way on a one-way street in Waikiki.
The city medical examiner identified the victim as Ray Kanemori.
The driver of the car, a 28-year-old Honolulu man, was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide and driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Vehicular homicide investigators said the driver was headed the wrong way on Walina Street, a one-way, makai-bound street, when he struck Kanemori with a 2005 Chevrolet Impala sedan.
Kanemori, who was not in a crosswalk, was taken in critical condition to The Queen’s Medical Center and later died there, police said.
The incident happened around 11:20 p.m. last night.
Kanemori is the fourth pedestrian to be killed on Oahu this year and the fifth traffic fatality overall.
