Punahou girls get back at Mid-Pac, 58-39

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Taking back first place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball race, Punahou pulled away from Mid-Pacific, 58-39, last night to avenge a loss to the Owls before the New Year.

The defending state runner-up Buffanblu improved to 4-1 and are alone atop the ILH standings, a half-game ahead of 'Iolani (3-1). MPI fell to 3-2 after its second straight loss.

"We've been waiting to play Mid-Pac again, because we didn't play well against them the first time, we had no energy," said Punahou forward Hailey Maeda, a junior who scored a game-high 14 points last night. "We were hurting from that loss."

In that Dec. 29 game, the Buffanblu let a seven-point lead evaporate in the final five minutes of regulation before losing in overtime, 34-31. Last night, Punahou finished strong and ended the game with a 15-3 run.

"We had to sustain our intensity, not just on defense but also on offense," Buffanblu coach Mike Taylor said. "We wanted to push the ball when we had a chance and try to get some easy baskets on the break."

Punahou opened the game clearly energized and immediately applied full-court pressure. The Owls broke the press early on, however, and took an 8-4 lead.

But the Buffanblu answered with three straight baskets to end the first period, including Mysha Sataraka's fadeaway banker that gave them a 10-8 lead with three seconds remaining.

MPI closed to 24-23 on Ashley Yamachika's layup with 1:27 left in the half, but Kaylin Okuma's jumper 25 seconds later and Maeda's putback with 12 seconds remaining put Punahou up, 28-23, at the break.

The Buffanblu stretched it to 43-33 after three periods sparked by Brittnie Lau's 3-pointer that started a 7-1 run.

After Yamachika's free throw closed it to 43-36 with 4:55 left, freshman guard Khaliya Thompson sank a free throw to start the 15-3 run that closed out the game.

Keaton McFadden led the Owls with 11 points. Thompson added 10 points for Punahou.
