Maui surfers Clay Marzo, Granger Larsen and Albee Layer remained in contention in the men's division of the Billabong ASP Junior World Championships at Australia.

The entire second round and 12 heats of the third round were run in 1- to 3-foot waves yesterday at North Narrabeen, Sydney, Australia.

Marzo advanced to the fourth round, winning both his second- and third-round heats.

He defeated California's Dillon Perillo in the fourth round, 13.16-7.94. Earlier in the day, Marzo eliminated Florida's Cody Thompson, 11.43-11.26.

Larsen and Layer won their respective second-round heats, and have yet to complete their third-round heats. Larsen is the top-seeded Hawai'i surfer, and the No. 7 seed overall for the contest.

Keanu Asing of 'Ewa Beach won his second-round heat, but was then eliminated in the third round.

Asing edged Kiron Jabour of Sunset Beach, 11.84-11.73, in the second round. California's Nat Young then beat Asing in the third round.

Tonino Benson of the Big Island was eliminated in the second round.

The contest is considered the world championship for surfers age 20 and younger.

The women's division did not run any heats yesterday. Alessa Quizon of Wai'anae and Malia Manuel of Kaua'i are the only Hawai'i surfers remaining in the women's division.

Quizon and Manuel are scheduled to face each other in a quarterfinal heat when the women's competition resumes.
