Oahu police issue five times more fireworks citations than last year

Advertiser Staff

The number of fireworks-related citations issued on O‘ahu increased more than five times from a year ago, the Honolulu Police Department said today.

There were 93 citations issued from Dec. 30 through Jan. 1, HPD Maj. Clayton Kau said. That’s up from 14 last year.
Kau said it’s not clear if the jump in citations was a sign that there were more illegal fireworks violations occurring than a year ago. There is, however, evidence that more people in the public are making it a point to call HPD with complaints.
There were 1,860 fireworks-related complaints taken by HPD during the three-day period, up from 1,361 complaints last year.
Only one fireworks-related arrest was made, compared with two last year.
