Villegas tops in Phoenix

Advertiser News Services

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The memory of a missed 3-foot putt did nothing to diminish Camilo Villegas' game yesterday in the Phoenix Open.

The 28-year-old Colombian tied the tournament first-round record with a 9-under 62 to take a one-shot lead over former Florida teammate Matt Every.

Villegas regrouped with a bogey-free round yesterday after making the semifinals of the Match Play Championship last weekend, but missing the short putt that would have put him in the final. He beat Sergio Garcia in the third-place match.

Justin Rose, Mark Wilson, Ryuji Imada, Rickie Fowler and Pat Perez were three strokes back at 65 in near-perfect conditions at TPC Scottsdale.

Phil Mickelson and defending champion Kenny Perry were in a group at 68.

Parker McLachlin, a Punahou and UCLA alum, opened with a 67 and was tied for 17th place.

OTHER GOLF

Fujikawa struggles: Honolulu's Tadd Fujikawa had five back-nine bogeys en route to a 5-over 77 yesterday in the weather-plagued second round of the eGolf Professional Tour's Savannah Quarters Classic in Savannah, Ga.

The Moanalua High alum has a 36-hole total of 4-over 148 when play was suspended because of darkness with only 60 players able to complete their rounds.

Wie six shots back: Hawai'i's Michelle Wie shot a second-round 1-over 73 today and was tied for 27th — six shots off the lead — at the HSBC Champions LPGA event in Singapore.

Wie, a Punahou alum and current Stanford student, has a 36-hole total of 145. Angela Stanford (71) and Song-Hee Kim (70) share the lead at 5-under 139.

CHING NOT SELECTED

Hawai'i's Brian Ching was not among 20 players picked for the United States' exhibition at the Netherlands next Wednesday — the last match before American coach Bob Bradley selects his World Cup roster.

Ching, a Kamehameha Schools alum, scored on a diving header in the 75th minute and assisted on Sacha Kljestan's go-ahead goal in the second minute of stoppage time as the Americans beat El Salvador, 2-1, in an exhibition match Wednesday in Tampa, Fla.
