HILO, Hawaii — Four Hawaii residents have been denied standing to participate in an Army license application to handle depleted uranium.

The order came Wednesday from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Atomic Safety and Licensing Board. It held the four failed to prove they were likely to be harmed by the military’s actions.
One of the residents, Jim Albertini of the Big Island, says the commission appears to be “a rubber stamp” for the military and the nuclear industry.
The Army is seeking an after-the-fact license to possess the radioactive material that was used in weapons training at Schofield Barracks on Oahu and Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island.
The depleted uranium spotting rounds were used in the 1960s and have been emitting low levels of radiation since.
