Winter Olympics: Italy's Fabris withdraws from Olympic 10,000

RICHMOND, British Columbia (AP) — A bad Olympics got worse for Enrico Fabris today, when the Italian speedskater withdrew from the 10,000-meter race because of nausea.

With two golds and a bronze, Fabris was the most successful male skater in Turin four years ago. In Vancouver, he has struggled, finishing seventh in the 5,000 and 10th in the 1,500, where he was the defending champion.

Fabris woke up feeling sick Tuesday and decided to skip the race, which never was his strongest event.

"During breakfast, he said he was not OK," coach Maurizio Marchetto said. Fabris went to the Olympic Oval hoping he'd feel better once on the ice but did not.

"This is not an easy race, especially when you are trying to skate in these conditions," Marchetto said. "You know the result before you start."

Fabris still has one race — the team pursuit — to save his Olympics. Four years ago, he led the Italian pursuit team to gold before a delirious home crowd. Now, he likes Italy's chances to add another medal in the event.

When asked whether Fabris would still compete in the event, Marchetto said "Why not?"
