A head-on crash that killed two men yesterday brought Kaua'i's 2010 traffic death toll to five, with all the deaths occurring along a four-mile stretch of Kaumuali'i Highway.
Yesterday's victims were both Lāwa'i residents, police said.
Don Kaneshige, 51, died at the scene of the crash near the Pune'e Road junction. James Denny, 86, was pronounced dead at Wilcox Hospital.
Both men were both driving pickup trucks when they collided. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
Police said Denny was heading west at around 9:58 a.m. on Kaumuali'i and was approaching Oma'o Bridge when he crossed the center line and crashed head-on into Kaneshige's east-bound truck.
County spokeswoman Mary Daubert said she does not know of any significant hazards along the state highway that could have contributed to the crashes.
Police closed the highway following the crash and traffic was redirected. The highway reopened at around 1 p.m.
An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the crash.
