WAC honors for Hou

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i senior Corie Hou is the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week after her performance at last weekend's Peg Barnard Invitational.

Hou, from Clovelly, Australia, tied for fifth at the tournament, which was hosted by Stanford. Hou shot 8-over-par 150 (73-77) to lead her teammates for the fourth straight tournament. Her 73 in the first round was her low of the season. Hou's fifth-place individual finish is the best by any Rainbow Wahine during the 2009-10 season.

Hou also posted her sixth career top-10 finish and fifth was her best showing since she tied for fourth at last year's Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational.

It is Hou's first WAC Golfer of the Week honor.

BURNS TEES OFF

TJ Kua and his University of Hawai'i teammates will host 14 teams in the 34th annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, starting today at Leilehua Golf Course. Play begins at 8 a.m. each day, with the final groups expected in about 1 p.m. Friday.

Reigning NCAA champion Texas A&M, ranked fifth in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, will defend its Burns title. Ryan Palmer, who won this year's Sony Open in Hawai'i, is an A&M alum.

Other ranked teams in the field are No. 16 Cal, No. 23 UNLV, No. 25 SMU and No. 46 Fresno State.
