LAWRENCE, Kan. — It took Bill Self less than 17 full seasons to get to 400 wins. He doubts many coaches of his generation will stick around long enough to approach 800, the sort of numbers put up by giants like Bob Knight and Dean Smith.

"I think it's different now," Self said last night after his No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks used a second-half surge to beat Iowa State, 73-59.

"I don't think there's going to be a lot of guys who win 800 from this point forward. I think the business has changed enough where guys aren't going to coach for as many years as they had. And also, coaches are making more money now so you don't have to work as long to retire."

Self has also coached at Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Illinois.

Marcus Morris and Cole Aldrich each had double-doubles for the Jayhawks (24-1, 10-0), and Xavier Henry and Tyshawn Taylor fueled a 14-0 run to raise Self's overall record to 400-146.

It was also consecutive home victory No. 56 for Kansas, the second longest in school history and just four shy of the record set during the Roy Williams era.

Self, who spent the week downplaying his milestone victory, was given the ball in a brief ceremony right after the game.

"He keeps saying it doesn't mean anything to him," said senior guard Sherron Collins. "But it means something to us, that we were a part of it."

Craig Brackins, who once scored 42 against Kansas, had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Iowa State (13-12, 2-9).

John Wall had 24 points — one short of his career high — and Eric Bledsoe added 16, helping the host Wildcats (24-1, 9-1 SEC), who used a 10-0 run for a 60-52 lead they never lost in turning back the Volunteers (18-6, 6-4).

Jon Scheyer scored 22 points and the host Blue Devils (21-4, 9-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) marked coach Mike Krzyzewski's 1,000th game at the school with a rout of the Terrapins (16-7, 6-3). Krzyzewski is 781-219 in 30 seasons at Duke.

Jacob Pullen had 15 points and 10 assists, and the host Wildcats (20-4, 7-3 Big 12) started the second half with a 23-8 run for a 51-34 lead in defeating the Buffaloes (11-13, 2-8) for the ninth straight time.

Kalin Lucas returned to the starting lineup after missing a game with a right ankle sprain and scored 24 points as the visiting Spartans (20-6, 10-3 Big Ten) beat the Nittany Lions (8-16, 0-12) to end a three-game losing streak.

Mac Hopson had 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists as the visiting Vandals (12-12, 4-8 Western Athletic Conference) completed a two-game season sweep of the Bulldogs (13-13, 6-6).

Sylvester Seay led Fresno State with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Mike Ladd added 13 points for the Bulldogs, who got six points from their bench compared to Idaho's 29.

Luke Babbitt scored 27 points and Armon Johnson added 24 and the host Wolf Pack (15-9, 7-4) used a 10-2 run for an 87-78 lead in overtime to beat the Broncos (11-14, 2-10).

Ike Okoye led Boise State with 32 points. Daequon Montreal added 18, including a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in regulation that sent the game into overtime tied at 73.

UTAH STATE 81, SAN JOSE STATE 65

Nate Bendall scored 18 points to lead four teammates in double-figures as the visiting Aggies (20-6, 10-2) extended their winning streak to 10 games with a rout of the Spartans (12-12, 5-7).

Adrian Oliver scored 28 points for the Spartans, who lost at home for only the second time this season.

Philadelphia University men's basketball coach Herb Magee won his 900th career game when the host Rams beat Bloomfield College yesterday. The Division II coach is just three victories away from passing Bobby Knight for first place on the NCAA career wins list. Knight's 902 victories are the most for coaches who spent their entire careers at the NCAA level. Northern State coach Don Meyer has 921 victories at the NAIA and NCAA divisions.
