Lifeguards are advising all beachgoers at Kailua Beach of a oily substance in the water and are asking them to avoid swimming in the immediate area, according to the city Emergency Services Department.

The oily substance was first reported at 12:20 p.m. today at Kailua Beach, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman of EMS.
About 25 people complained to lifeguards of coming in contact with a slippery substance that tasted like oil while they were swimming, Cheplic said. A sheen of about 150 yards by 50 yards was seen offshore near 248 N. Kalaheo Ave., fronting the Kailua Beach Park boat ramp area.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard have been contacted.
