Take in stories and dance at annual arts festival
| |||
Storytellers from Alaska, Mississippi, Massachusetts and Hawai'i will be on stages throughout Bishop Museum today for the 10th annual Mary Kawena Pukui Arts Festival.
This year's theme is "Celebrating Song, Dance and Story," which will be demonstrated through the art of native cultures, with featured performances by a collaborative dance group led by Peter Rockford Espiritu, artistic director of Tau Dance Theatre, and an aerobatic performance by Samadhi Hawai'i.
The annual festival honors Mary Kawena Pukui, a revered Hawaiian scholar and linguist who valued storytelling and oral history and published the first native Hawaiian language dictionary.
Admission to the festival is $5 for kama'āina and military and free for children and Bishop Museum members. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features family-friendly entertainment and activities throughout the day. The collaborative dance performance is at noon.
